SIBU: Around 2,000 supporters from Sarawak erupted in joy as Wong Ling Ching, the women’s singles player representing Sarawak at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA), secured a gold medal in her category, ending a 38-year gold medal drought for the Sarawak badminton team at SUKMA.

Wong triumphed over Penang’s Oo Shan Zi in straight sets with scores of 21-12 and 21-15, clinching the gold medal while Oo settled for silver.

“This SUKMA marks my final appearance. I meticulously prepared for this event and underwent rigorous training. Winning the gold medal and making history for Sarawak fills me with happiness and gratitude,” Wong shared with reporters post-match today (Aug 24).

In response to reporters’ playful inquiry about her plans for the RM15,000 incentive from the Sarawak Government, Wong simply responded with a shy smile.

Looking ahead, Wong mentioned three upcoming tournaments in September. Her immediate focus is on rest and recovery before resuming intense training.
