KAPIT: In conjunction with the Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari that was held last April 6 and 7, the organisers held Baleh Rainforest Run at Rumah Lugat near here, the first transit station for the rafters.
There were three categories: Men’s Open (12km), Men’s Veteran (5km) and Women’s Open (5km).
The Men’s Open was won by Nuwin Lium; the Men’s Veteran by Christopher Cherry, and the Women’s Open by Yong Yee Ling.
Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri James Jemut Masing, who is also Infrastructure Development and Transportation Minister, presented the prizes to the winners when he officiated at the launch of a project called “Projek Penambahbaikan Rumah Miskin Rakyat Sarawak” at Rumah Lugat a 20-door longhouse in Nanga Semawang, Sungai Majau.
In the Men’s Open category Loh Leong Hua came in second place and Remmy Legey was third. They each received prizes in the form of cash, trophy, medal, and a T-shirt.
Those in fourth to tenth places were Balan Chan, Musa Singa, Ariffin, Agah Jugah, Chu Sin Sing, Amran Tahir and Linus Laing. They received medals and T-shirts.
Second place in the Men’s Veteran category was won by Bunggang Julau and third was Paul Badi. Those in fourth to tenth places were Unding Jugah, Akat, Mandau Bagup, Oyam Ugin, Embang Engkang, Favian Masing and Galong Luang.
Immediately behind Yong in the Women’s Open category was Yu Min Ming followed by Amilyn. In fourth place was Umban Uging while Uncha Remang was in fifth place.
The organising committee also presented free T-shirts to the first 100 participants who completed the run in their respective categories.
To coincide with the function, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong was given the honour to commission a newly completed solar power project at the longhouse.
Among those present at the function were Masing’s wife Puan Sri Corrine Masing, Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang, Ngemah assemblyman Alexander Vincent, Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chuk Pai Ugon, Deputy State Secretary Datuk Jaul Samion, Kapit Resident Joseph Belayong Punan, Deputy Resident Galong Luang, political secretaries to the Chief Minister Nicholas Kudi Jantai and Edwin Banta, Bukit Mabong District Officer Douglas Pungga, Pemanca Steward Sawing, heads of various government departments, councillors, rafting team managers and some 400 longhouse people.
