KUCHING: The Forest Department of Sarawak and the Integrity and Ombudsman Unit organised a Mangrove Awareness Programme in conjunction with the World Wetland Day 2019 at the Ramsar Site, Kuching Wetland.

The programme was attended by 150  members of  the Sarawak Forest Department, the Integrity  and Ombudsman Unit, The Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati), participants from Japan Malaysia Association, students and lecturers from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and villagers.

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talip Zulpilip officiated at the programme.

He stated in his speech that the tree-planting activity was necessary in the interest of future generations as it helped to maintain and conserve the forests.

He further stressed that illegal logging must be eradicated in order to protect and preserve the natural forests in Sarawak.

At the ceremony, a forest conservation officer from the Forest Department Sarawak,    Irmadiana Ard conducted a briefing on the Kuching Wetland which is the fifth Ramsar Site in Malaysia.

Also present were Forest Department of Sarawak director Hamden Mohammad, MACC Sarawak director Razim Mohd Nor, Integrity and Ombudsman Unit director Adana Jed and representative of Japan Malaysia Association (SMA) Professor Kato Shigeru.
