KUCHING: The banking sector should provide solid environmental, social and governance (ESG) financing to encourage industries to move towards a sustainable energy future.

Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Julaihi Narawi said cooperation among various sectors is important to achieve this goal in addition to the support provided by his ministry and the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability.

“It is our hope that there will be a more complete direction in the near future to move towards sustainability, especially from the banking sector,” he said in his speech at the second day of the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 3.0) powered by Sarawak Energy at the Borneo Kuching Convention Centre, today.

Through the forum, insights into  ESG financing as well as the interplay between public policy, talent strategy and individual purpose will also be explored.

“It is to ensure the empowerment of the workforce towards the future for the achievement of energy sustainability,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy State Secretary Datuk Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel said Sarawak has been embarking on policies related to new energy solutions.

“It has started at planning and theoretical levels and some of the policies have been implemented. We have already delivered some although not on a large scale.

“Even though we faced several issues in implementing these policies, we’ve rectified them.

“That’s our business model and how the Sarawak government works,” he said.
