MIRI: Members of the “Baram Team” consisting of Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, Mulu rep Datuk Gerawat Gala, Telang Usang rep Dennis Ngau and Baram MP Anyie Ngau have a clear vision for Marudi and want it to be elevated to a division soon.

The team conveyed their vision and wish to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during his visit to the town today to launch the Marudi Waterfront.

In response to the suggestion (to elevate Marudi into a division), Abang Johari said the state government was open to the proposal.

“But we must first conduct a proper study. Perhaps it’s possible that one day it can become a division because Marudi is no longer an isolated town with a number of high impact development projects being carried out here. This Marudi Waterfront project is one example,” he said.

Meanwhile, Penguang when met later after the launching said he chose the design of the Marudi Waterfront, adding that it reflected the various ethnicities in Baram.

“I strongly believe that the waterfront, once completed, will be a tourist attraction,” he said.

It was Penguang’s idea to have a waterfront built in Marudi town when he was first elected as the Marudi assemblyman.

“Marudi is the place where the “mother of all regattas” was born more than 100 years ago; hence, I wanted to have the waterfront to be built here so that we have an iconic structure as a commemoration of the historical event,” he pointed out.

For Dennis Ngau, the Marudi Waterfront is one of the Sarawak government’s high impact development projects being carried out in this town. He believed the project would benefit the rakyat.

Dennis also revealed that the much-awaited Long Lama Bridge which will be open for public in early April will also spur the economy of the locals.

“Thanks to the Sarawak government and Abang Johari for these projects,” he said.

According to Dennis, the Long Lama Bridge will be launched by the chief minister in the end of April.
