MIRI: Kampung Long Bemang in Baram is set for a significant influx of development with several projects worth up to RM70 million on the cards.
Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau said it is a major milestone for the village, which has long been in need of infrastructural improvements to combat frequent flooding and other challenges it faces.
He highlighted three major projects that will commence in the near future, namely, the construction of a river erosion wall in front of Kampung Long Bemang, valued at RM8.88 million, a water plant project estimated at RM20 million, and the completion of the road from Simpang Kampung Long Bemang.
These projects are expected to greatly enhance the village infrastructure and provide much-needed relief to the local residents.
“The erosion bastion project, particularly along the longhouse block near SK Long Bemang, is essential,” Ngau said, explaining that the cliff erosion has come alarmingly close to the longhouse due to frequent flooding.
“Kampung Long Bemang, which is part of the Telang Usan area, experiences flooding at least seven times a year.
“The completion of the riverbank erosion prevention project, expected by May 2026, will hopefully bring a sigh of relief to the residents,” he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the riverbank erosion project at Kampung Long Bemang recently.
The project will involve the construction of a 200-metre-long retaining wall, costing RM8.88 million.
“Once this erosion fortress is completed, I hope the residents will sleep better,” he added.
However, he noted that the construction would be carried out in phases due to the high costs involved.
“The government cannot meet the demand to build a long fortification across the entire village at once,” Ngau said.
“But we will apply for the next phase of the project to obtain provisions for further extensions.”
Dennis also urged the residents to cooperate fully with the contractors to ensure the project is completed on schedule.
