KUCHING: The 40th Sarawak Open Chess competition (international) was held from Dec 19 Dec till yesterday at the Permasa hall, Wisma Kastam, Medan Raya, Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Sarawak.

The competition was jointly organised by Malaysian Customs Sports and Culture Council (MSKKM) Sarawak branch and Sarawak Chess Association.

A total of 92 contestants, including the disabled (OKU), from Uzbekistan, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, aside from Malaysia, participated in the competition.

JKDM director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha was present to witness the competition on Saturday.

State Customs MTT director Ramli Othman officiated at the closing ceremony of the competition.

There were a few categories opened for the competition namely, Open, Veterans, Women, Children below 15 and 12.

Grand Master (GM) Sir Barsov Alexei, from Uzbeskistan, was crowned the champion for the Open category while Muhammad Kamalsyah (Indonesia) and Amir Ghaazi Mohd Saprin (Malaysia) came in second and third respectively.

Winners of each category brought home cash prizes.
