KUCHING: New direct flights by Batik Air will not only enhance travel convenience but also stimulate economic growth, particularly in the Bintulu and Miri regions, says Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) on Tuesday (Oct 29), it was highlighted that Lee led a delegation for a courtesy visit to Batik Air CEO Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 28.
During the meeting, MOTS and Batik Air discussed potential increases in flight services to Sarawak, focusing on enhancing connectivity through more direct routes, including international options.
“The meeting underscores Batik Air’s commitment to expanding air travel options and supporting Sarawak’s growth through improved connectivity,” read the statement.
In a key development, Batik Air will launch new direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Bintulu starting Nov 1, 2024, with a schedule of 10 flights per week. Additionally, a Kuala Lumpur-Miri route will begin on Jan 14, 2025, offering 14 flights weekly.
“These new routes will strengthen connectivity between Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, making it easier for travelers to explore the region’s unique attractions,” the statement added.
Lee noted that these direct routes would facilitate business travel, tourism, and air cargo movement.
He stressed that with Shell’s headquarters moving to Miri, Sarawak aims to attract more visitors and investors, contributing to the state’s development across multiple sectors.
Joining the meeting were MOTS permanent secretary Datuk Wong Hee Sieng and aviation technical advisor Sio Yew Hua.
