KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang is advocating for the establishment of a critically needed fire and rescue (Bomba) station within his constituency.

During his Chinese New Year Open House at Jalan Stapok Avenue on Sunday (Feb 11), he stressed the necessity of such infrastructure for the area’s development.

“In our progress, the presence of fire and rescue facilities is indispensable. One or two (stations) are never enough.

“Currently, we are actively scouting for a suitable plot of land in Batu Kitang, strategically positioning it for the construction of the proposed fire station.”

Upon finalising the site selection, they will proceed with the planning phase and subsequently seek approval from the State Planning Authority.

Lo stated that he would not depend on allocation from the federal government as it would take too long and might not be achieved.

”I cannot afford to wait for federal assistance, given their track record. Promises are made but often unfulfilled, as we have seen with issues like dilapidated schools.”

Last year, the federal Ministry of Local Government and Housing (MLGH) announced plans to construct new Bomba stations in Sarawak, including those in the Batu Kawa and Kota Sentosa constituencies.

Minister Nga Kor Ming confirmed a budget allocation of RM13.2mil aimed at bolstering firefighting and rescue capabilities across the state.

This funding encompasses various initiatives, including the construction of the Sungai Asap Bomba station, as well as firefighter quarters at Tatau and Daro Bomba stations within this year.

Beyond advocating for the Bomba station, Lo expressed aspirations for further development within his constituency, including the establishment of secondary and primary schools, as well as a police station.

He remains hopeful that these endeavours will come to fruition, based on the financial potential of the state government.
