BAU: The Bau District is set to have a new attraction with plans to establish the Bau-China Friendship Park.

Tasik Biru assemblyman, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, said the effort is in line with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China this year.

He said it is appropriate to invite China to establish the friendship park because the Chinese community has existed in Bau for about 200 years.

“In addition to creating a new landmark, it is also a step forward to attract more tourists, especially from China, to Sarawak and to Bau.

“Certainly, people from that country also want to see the historical facts that happened before.”

Henry, who is also Deputy Minister of Transport (River and Sea), said this after launching the book “The Bau Miners Uprising in 1957” at the Bau District Office here Wednesday.

He added that the proposal for the construction of the park will be implemented with the cooperation of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching.

“Of course, we need the government to help later, but if there are investors willing to invest… we certainly welcome this.

“For this project, we do not set a time frame but will strive to make it happen,” he said.

Meanwhile, explaining the establishment of the Hakka Village, Henry explained that it is a proposal under the Greater Kuching Development Coordination Agency (GKCDA).

He said they have also allocated funds to implement the proposed project because the Hakka community resides in Bau.

“The Hakka Village project and the Bau-China Friendship Park may be built nearby, seen from the overall package because we want to create continuity of local products.

“This is also what the people desire; we want a spacious parking lot, a large park for various programmes or concerts. Therefore, we need a more comprehensive and strategic plan,” he said.
