KUCHING: The Kuching Division Sarawak Kembara Merdeka Convoy will be launched on July 20 at the Majma Mall.
Kuching Resident Fathi Hambali said Deputy Premier, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian is expected to flag off the convoy at 8.30am.
“The convoy will embark on a journey to Telok Melano, Lundu and Bau Civic Centre as its last destination. At Telok Melano, they will be welcomed by Tanjong Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan.
“Then there will be a showcase of cultural performances by the ethnic groups from Lundu including roadshows in Lundu town before heading to the Bau Civic Centre,” he said in an interview at the Kuching Resident’s Office recently.
Fathi added that in the Bau district, there will also be cultural performances from the local community and other activities until the convoy’s departure at 6pm to Kuching.
“An estimated 50,000 visitors are anticipated to attend three side programmes commemorating 60 years of Sarawak independence at the Kuching divisional level,” he said.
He said the Kuching Resident Office has planned several engaging activities such as the Sarawak Digital Exhibition which will be held at Plaza Merdeka for three days starting on July 21, from 9.30am to 9.30pm.
“Additionally, on July 21, the Sarawak X-Tive Programme will be conducted, featuring fitness activities including extreme sports and recreational sports at the Kuching Civic Centre, followed by cleaning activities in the area in the evening,” he said.
Apart from that, he said the Sarawak Kitchen Programme will also be held, providing a total of 60 stalls for Sarawakian entrepreneurs along the Kuching Waterfront compound.
“On July 22, the state-level celebration of 60 years of Sarawak independence will take place at Padang Merdeka.
“The day’s events will include the presentation of the Commemorative Medal at the Waterfront Hotel, a state banquet at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) and a concluding fireworks display,” he said.
Subsequently, on July 29, he said, a decorated boat parade will traverse the Sarawak River, followed by a street parade around Kuching city on Aug 5.
“Therefore, it is hoped that the public, including community leaders, educational institutions, school members, private sectors, associations, and civil servants, will actively participate in these celebrations,” he said.
