BAU: The District Office here has officially named two new roads after prominent individuals from this former gold mining town.

Jalan Lee Nyan Choi is named after the late Datuk Lee Nyan Choi, a former Bau assemblyman, while Jalan Michael Sadin is named after the late Michael Stephen Sadin, the first Bidayuh District Officer in Sarawak.

The naming and installation ceremony was officiated by Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep at Dewan Suarah Bau yesterday.

Henry said that by naming the roads after important people in Bau, people would always remember their contributions.

“He (Lee) was a very close friend of mine, sadly he passed away in January last year, but his name and legacy will always continue.

“He will always be remembered for his contributions to Chinese primary schools in Bau, such as a new hall and a new administration block for SJKC Chung Hua Taiton that we will soon officiate,” he said.

Henry also mentioned the late Sadin always tried to the best of his ability to serve and contribute to the development of all the communities.

“His appointment as a Temenggong to the Bidayuh community of the Kuching division, saw his days filled with meetings with the people, dialogues with community leaders and Ketua Masyarakat.

“He wanted progress and development for the rural poor, as his own experience with poverty and hardship during the Japanese Occupation made it easier for him to empathise with the poor and destitute,” Henry added.

Besides that, District Officer of Bau District Office and chairman of Bau District Council, Anelia Siam, thanked Henry and the council for proposing the names.

“Before this, there were a few roads within Bau town that were unnamed, thus I would like to thank the council and Datuk Henry for coming up with the idea.

“For the family members of the late Datuk Lee and Michael Sadin, their contributions will always be remembered by the people of Bau,” she said.
