SIBU: Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh distributed Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants totalling RM30,000 to three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) here, Friday (Nov 22).

The recipients were Mingchiang Tunhion Huay Sibu, the Sibu Foochow Association Park Fund, and the Sibu Foochow Centennial Building Fund for Foochow Settlement, each receiving RM10,000.

Wong said the residents of Bawang Assan would benefit from more comprehensive development starting next year.

“I only joined GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) in May, so the allocation I received for this year was not complete.

“However, next year I will receive a full allocation of RM8 million, consisting of RM2 million from the Minor Rural Project (MRP), RM5 million from the Rural Transformation Project (RTP), and RM1 million from the Sarawak Poor Home Improvement Programme (PPRMS).”

He said this when met by reporters after presenting the MRP cheques at the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Bawang Assan service centre.

Wong, who is also the PDP senior vice-president, urged residents in his constituency to submit applications to access these funds for their benefit.

According to him, the allocations distributed this year were done in stages, prioritising urgent needs.

“The Bawang Assan constituency has around 105 longhouses that I have to look after, as well as the Chinese community and others who require development funding.

“This year, the available allocation was very limited, but I believe that starting next year, the development funds for Bawang Assan will provide greater benefits and cover even more areas.”
