KUCHING: The upcoming Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK 2) project, scheduled for completion before 2028, is poised to significantly bolster Sarawak’s capacity to host large-scale business events.

Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, highlighted the existing constraints faced by Sarawak’s venues, which currently can only accommodate up to 5,000 delegates.

He emphasized that this limitation has hampered the state’s ability to attract larger events.

“If a conference surpasses 5,000 delegates, we are compelled to decline due to insufficient facilities and venue size,” he remarked.

Abdul Karim made these statements during a press conference held in conjunction with the exchange of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) at Baitulmakmur II today (Aug 30).

“With these upcoming developments, we can enhance our offerings, allowing us to host conferences accommodating up to 10,000 delegates,” he added.

He also disclosed that during the latest Sarawak Cabinet meeting, it was decided that convention centres will now directly report to the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) to enhance coordination and foster the development of the tourism and creative industries sectors.

This partnership will focus on two key projects: the Economic Impact Study and the Legacy Impact Study, in addition to the Legacy Impact Measurement System.
