SIBU: The Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) continues to improve each year, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He noted that BCF is one of the most anticipated events of the year in Sibu, as it not only unites local cultures such as Chinese, Dayak and Malay but also attracts international communities from across Malaysia, other Asian countries and China.

“During BCF, we unite to showcase what Sibu can achieve, and you should be very proud of it. From the first performance alone, it is truly incredible and amazing.

“It embodies unity—different races, different ages, young and old—all coming together. This reflects the true spirit not only of Sibu but also of Sarawak. It serves as a platform to showcase our best and richest heritage,” he said.

Dr Sim said this in his speech at the 20th BCF opening ceremony organised by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 2 last night (Aug 9).

Meanwhile, regarding BCF’s official mascot, Dr Sim said that selecting the ‘engkuli,’ or Bornean clouded leopard, represents a commitment to sustainable development.

“This is proof that (SMC and the people of Sibu) are taking care of the environment, ensuring the protection and promotion of these rare species. We love and care for them,” he said.

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, also waxed lyrical about the BCF Arts, Culture and Exhibition (ACE) Centre.

“I had the opportunity to explore the handicrafts at the ACE Centre, and indeed, each year, the quality of the handicrafts seems to improve.

“I want to congratulate them for their perseverance and commend all the artists for never giving up, as the quality is reaching commercial greatness, not just remaining hobbies,” he added.

He congratulated Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) for their effort in organising BCF.

Also present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, Sibu MP Oscar Ling and SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh.
