KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian advised the people and social media users to be vigilant when consuming news and products advertised online.

He was alluding to a Chinese New Year (CNY) video message which highlighted various real-life scam cases including deceptive advertisements that seem too good to be true, fraudulent calls posing as personnel from the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia and fake promotions using his image.

With an abundance of information online, he said it is hard to distinguish what is true and what is fake.

“For instance, AI can imitate my looks and use my voice to spread fake news,” in which the video showed Dr Sim speaking in various foreign languages like Japanese, Thai, Korean and Tamil, all of which were generated by AI.

“Therefore, be careful online and be vigilant against potential scams,” he said in his CNY message.

He also extends his CNY greetings and wishes everyone an auspicious year of smooth endeavours, blessed with peace and good health as well as filled with love and joy.
