MIRI: People of various races and religions in the state are reminded to always be vigilant to ‘outsiders’ who are trying to destroy the prevailing peace.
“Maintain the prevailing peace among the various races in this state (Sarawak). Please do not let ‘outsiders’ split us,” said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who is also Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Minister.
He was speaking at a cheque presentation ceremony at Miri Indian Association here, yesterday.
Uggah was also proud to see Sarawakians, irrespective of their race and belief, live harmoniously with one another.
At the event, Uggah presented a cheque for RM1 million under the Sarawak ‘s Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to the association to complete the building of its community hall.
“This is what Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has been doing under its inclusiveness policy by taking care of other races and attends to their needs,” he pointed out.
Receiving on behalf of the association was its president, Cr Karambir Singh.
A total of RM1.5 million is needed to complete the association’s multi-faith community centre which is scheduled for completion in the middle of next year.
“The prevailing peace looks natural to us, but fragile. One wrong move can shatter it. Hence, we must preserve and maintain it at all cost.
“Take care of Sarawak from irresponsible people who are trying to split us. This is our home,” he said.
At a press conference held later, Uggah who is also State Disaster Management Committee chairman revealed that following rampant open burning activities in a neighbouring country, a meeting to discuss on precautionary approaches would be held next week.
“We will direct the relevant agencies to take extra precautionary measures to prepare for any possibilities during this coming dry spell,” he said.
Among those present were Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shim, Unifor director Datuk Dr Ngenang Jangu, Miri Indian Association deputy president Thomas Sadasivan and Miri district officer Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf.
