KUCHING: Sarawak Head of Traffic, Supt. Alexson Naga anak Chabu warned members of the public to be wary of a scam involving traffic police.

Naga said there are many people who received phone calls from callers in recent weeks who claimed to be from the traffic police personnel. These callers will claim that they need to inform the
public who are involved in a hit and run, or that they have killed someone . They even give names of genuine traffic personnel in Sarawak. After that they will give a detailed penalty if the victims
do not clear the cases. Advising members of the public never to give their bank account number or their personal particulars to anyone on the handphone, Naga said this is just a scam.

Recently, a manager from a company said his wife received such a call claiming that her company which rented a BMW was involved in a hit and run accident. The caller gave a name of a traffic personnel in Simpang Tiga. The manager saw his wife talking for some time with the caller and said he would talk to the person. The caller tried to clear the case but the manager said his wife company never rented any BMW for any client.

He then told the caller he would meet him at the Simpang Tiga police station. However, after checking, he found no police personnel had made any call to his wife.

When interviewed, Naga said it was unfortunate that these people are tarnishing the traffic police reputation with such calls. He urged those who receive such calls to check with the Simpang Tiga traffic section at telephone number 082-221127 or  082-274018/ 274264/ 274259  at Badharuddin headquarters.
