SARIKEI: The Sarawak Information Department warns the public against scammers, particularly those operating via social media.

Its assistant director, Ajes Tuah, advised the public not to respond to suspicious phone calls or unknown numbers, to avoid clicking random links, and to refrain from sharing personal information such as ATM PINs or TAC numbers, as doing so exposes them to the risk of scams.

“Scammers are always looking for opportunities to exploit unaware individuals. If you feel like you are a victim, do not panic. Immediately head to the nearest police station to file a report or contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the 2024 Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) convoy tour, officiated by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii at the Indoor Stadium of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Kwang Chien here on Thursday.

Ajes also reminded the public and information technology users to always maintain cybersecurity and avoid being trapped by the spread of fake news, defamation, and the rise of cybercrimes such as online fraud, cyberbullying, sexual crimes, and scams, which are becoming increasingly worrying.

“Therefore, I would like to especially remind students to always be wise users of social media platforms.

“Do not share information you are unsure of, maintain decorum in the digital world, and most importantly, be cautious when using social media,” he stressed.
