MIRI: A total 250 people from 19 agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) collected a staggering 2,363kgs of trash in just two hours during a beach clean-up on Sunday.
Organised by the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) the beach cleaning programme was held along Marina Beach here.
Among those present were Mayor Adam Yii, NSJA president Andy Jong and the event’s organising chairman Chai Choon Chin.
Yii who lauded NSJA for initiating the programme described the event as the largest so far this year.
“The purpose of this beach clean-up is to jointly maintain and protect the cleanliness of the coastal environment of the city to attract tourists, and it is a necessary measure to raise the awareness of the community on the importance of environmental cleanliness and its role in the drama,” he said.
“Miri’s seaside location is unique, with many beaches. If we maintain our beach well, it will attract tourists. It is hoped that through this campaign it will draw the attention of the local community to the importance of keeping beaches clean as this will greatly boost local tourism.”
At the same time, he added, that this is also in line with Miri City Council’s (MCC) commitment to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through its SDGs.
