MIRI: Lutong Beach can breathe a sigh of relief when a proposal for comprehensive shoreline protection has been approved by the federal government, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
“We have already brought these matters [wave erosion and sea debris] to the federal government for further action,” Lee said during a recent site visit to the Kuala Batu 1 fishermen market today (July 23).
The proposal, prepared by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak, aims to be a long-term solution for the beach, particularly vulnerable to wave erosion and accumulating debris during king tides.
This erosion threatens not only the shoreline but also the Lutong coastal road.
“I have also highlighted this issue to Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition & Water Transformation,” he added.
While the exact cost of the project is yet to be determined, Lee confirmed that the department had informed him the project was approved in principle.
