KUCHING: A bedridden single mother of five had recently received donations and integrated work by various agencies in a one-off service.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development (KKWPK) Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah along with State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), and many other agencies came together to visit the single mother who is residing at Green Road today (March 5).

“This visit is aimed to aid Nor Karmira Benny Karmilan by doing communal works at her house so that it will look nicer, cleaner and safer to live in.

“Aside from the communal works, we had also brought along tools, dry food, and other things to improve their living space,” said Fatimah.

According to her, aside from giving financial aid and doing communal work at the house, Fatimah also talked to the State Education Department (JPNS) on the children’s school placement.

“The children are currently attending SK RPR Batu Kawa where the van transporting them going back and forth to school is sponsored by Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation.

“As I can see, the closest school to their house is actually SK Green Road and SK Catholic English and JPNS suggested that they were to be transferred to either two of these schools.

“However, the transfer is leaning more towards SK Catholic English because their mother wishes for them to go to the same school  together and SK Catholic English has a preschoolers programme as well,” she added.

When asked what other aid Nor Karmira received, Fatimah noted that as it was hard for Nor Karmira to move around, the State General Hospital will also give a helping hand towards her.

“In order to avoid her spinal getting worse, the ambulance would come over to pick her up on her appointment days,” she explained.

The 26 year old single mother had been bedridden since August last year due to a slipped disc. She was left by her husband while she is carrying her youngest (now five years old) son in her womb.

She used to work three jobs a day to make ends meet for her and her children. Currently, she and her children are taken care of by her mother.

Also attending and helping with the communal works here were KKWPK staff; Bomba Sarawak director Khirudin Drahman and his team; DBKU; State Social Welfare Department director Noriah Ahmad and her team; Kapitan Sg Maong and other volunteers.
