BOAO, China: Malaysian National News Agency’s (Bernama) chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang said he shares the view that the Asian media should build new platforms for cooperation to serve as the news bridge connecting Asia and the world.
By the same token, he said, Asian media ought to break out from its domain in order to build a better global public opinion ecosystem for Asia’s development on the world stage.
“On this score, I give due credit to Asian media organisations like China’s CGTN and Singapore’s Channel News Asia, to name a few,” he said in his remarks at the Asia Media Cooperation Conference here Friday.
Azman noted that while journalists from outside Asia had often been viewed as reporting the region from a Western bias, at the end of the day it was the homegrown Asian media organisations themselves that on balance would do justice to Asia and Asians.
“In my view, now is the best time ever for Asian media to ‘flex its muscles’ or exert its power and influence to enter the forefront in the world media scheme of things,” the news agency chairman said.
Azman further said that the Asian media should leverage its assets, talents and potential to be an important force in promoting Asia’s social and economic development.
At the same time, he said, it should take cognisance of an equally key agenda — that of enhancing the cooperation between Asian media organisations themselves.
The conference was held during the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2019 in this town located in China’s province of Hainan. – Bernama
