KUCHING: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is hoping to successfully register 50,000 members in the state by the end of this year, said State Bersatu spokesperson Affendi Jeman. “We gather here with supporters from all over Sarawak representing 31 parliamentary constituencies. “This is done on our own initiative as a sign of support and wish to help make our chairman, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s dreams to bring Bersatu to Sarawak, a reality.

“He is a leader who cares for the people, which is why we hope to multiply our efforts to reach our target of 50,000 members by end of this year. “At the same time, we also hope he (Mahathir) will be able to launch Bersatu in Sarawak,” he said during a press conference on the formation of pro-tem committees for the 31 Bersatu divisions in Sarawak at Merdeka Palace Hotel and Suites here yesterday. He added that over 19,000 people in Sarawak have since filed their applications to be members of Bersatu.

“Once Bersatu has been officially registered and launched its branch here, more Sarawakians will join the party. “Our confidence is based on the mood of the majority of the people of Sarawak who want to see change in the state’s political landscape and Bersatu is the right party for that.

“Sarawakians have waited too long for this moment and this can be seen from results of the 14th General Election (GE14) whereby Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) – previously Barisan Nasional (BN) Sarawak – lost 12 parliamentary seats. “Based on my personal views, if Bersatu was established here before GE14, the seats obtained for Pakatan Harapan (PH) would have been more,” he said.

Although the membership application of the supporters have yet to be processed, Affendi urged the top leadership in Bersatu to consider their applications and wish to join Bersatu. “We are adamant on joining Bersatu and I am confident that majority of Sarawakians feel the same way as well,” he said.
