KUCHING: The short film “Kumbang (Bugs)”, directed by Gwai Lou and produced by Annabel Tiu and Feisal Azizuddin, emerged as the winner of the Best Short Film and the top award in the Open Category at the 19th Mini Film Festival (MFF).
Renowned filmmaker and jury member Rashid Salleh expressed how Kumbang served as a reminder of the perils associated with external influences on children.
“The child actors were convincing in the roles, and the story itself compelled us to question the access to modern technology in this day and age.
“Also in the Open Category, Garek by director Cech Adria and produced by Haziqah Azemi were awarded the Special Jury prize.”
Rashid also acknowledged the film’s compelling storytelling, exceptional acting, and its powerful message that invited contemplation.
In the Student Category, the Best Short Film award went to Where No One Lives, directed by Li Anne Liew and produced by Cynthia Wang.
Jury member Sarbini Hamdan commended the film for its masterful storytelling that intricately wove together multiple narratives, leaving a profound impact.
“The film’s thought-provoking theme and engaging characters explore the depths of human emotions, provoking introspection and sparking conversations.”
Jury member Nabil Shohimi praised Li Anne Liew’s captivating portrayal of the life, thoughts, and emotions of the three distinct characters in the film, describing it as a showcase of their unique personalities.
Festival director Yow Chong Lee expressed his gratitude for the successful 19th MFF x MAF event held at a new venue.
Yow, representing Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s Applied & Creative Arts Faculty, extended his appreciation to all sponsors, including Finas, Goethe Institut, Japan Foundation, Hoan Gallery, TVS, and others.
Looking ahead, he announced that discussions for the 20th MFF x MAF would commence soon.
He emphasised the ambition of the organisers, stating that although the festival operated on a mini scale, it aimed for greatness.
