BETONG: Continuous heavy downpour in Betong Division has caused flash floods and landslides near residences in the area.

The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) here received multiple reports on floods and landslide incidents in the rural areas.

Some roads have been cut off due to flash floods and several landslide cases have been reported happening near longhouses.

According to APM Betong social media post, a bridge near a longhouse at Mupoh Baroh, Spak has been submerged in water since the evening of Feb 28 and water supply to the longhouse was also cut off.

A car was also submerged by the flood, however, there were no casualties and the situation was under control.

Meanwhile roads near a longhouse in Padeh were cut off as the water level rose to five feet on a bridge there.

The APM personnel reported that the water level has risen due to water overflowing from Sungai Layar.

APM personnel have also monitored the flood situation and reported that roads towards Layar and to Rumah Rian Batang were cut off as the water level has risen about four feet. As such road users are advised to use alternative routes.

At Rumah Dabok in Layar, the tuai rumah informed APM that water has risen five to six feet cutting off roads to the longhouse.

Four houses near the area were affected by the flood as water level rose to about two feet and were at risk as the water was rising due to the rain.

Villages in Debak were also at risk of being affected by flood. During APM personnel’s monitoring duty, Kampung Bungey and Kampung Lalang were affected by flood.

A few locations in the village areas have been flooded with the water level rising.

APM Betong also received report on landslide incidents. At Rumah Kechendai Sigan in Kabok, Spak, the longhouse suffered damages in front and at the back of the longhouse.

There were still minor ground movements causing small landslides. According to the tuai rumah, the landslide happened at 3 am as it was raining heavily at that time.

Also in Spak, Rumah Aji Telajan in Kusing has been damaged by a minor landslide incident.

Similarly, the incident happened at around 3 am due to heavy rains in the area.

While monitoring the situation, APM personnel reported that there were still minor ground movements at the scene, however, vehicles can pass through.

APM Betong reported that that temporary evacuation centres have yet to open as the situation are under control.
