KUCHING: The Sarawak government will build gated quarters for civil servants in the region, including staff from the Medical Department.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said facilities have to be upgraded, especially for medical staff in the rural areas.
“The doctors, and nurses must have good quarters equipped with a gym, recreational area, among others. We have to give them a good place to stay.
“Therefore, our regional government will provide necessary facilities and recreational areas so that civil servants will feel safe being in that particular complex.
“We will start off in Simunjan and Gedong. After that, we will have it in all the districts,” he said during the Sarawak Heart Centre’s 20th anniversary dinner at the DUN building yesterday (Jan 16).
Abang Johari also said the Ministry of Health (MoH) could rent the quarters for their staff without worrying about managing the complex as the community will manage it.
He noted that most doctors are reluctant to work in the rural areas here due to the bad conditions of the quarters.
“I have instructed my secretary to revamp the government quarters. There is a need to provide basic and modern accommodation to our civil servants, including the federal staff.
“This is what we are going to do to improve our healthcare in the future,” he said.
