KUCHING: The Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) has clarified that upgrades are ongoing to provide better water quality in Kapit. “Under the Ministry of Utilities, JBALB is working hard to strengthen and reinforce water supply throughout rural Sarawak and to carry out intervention works to resolve immediate water supply issues,” said the department in a statement yesterday in response to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sungai Kapit chairman Teng Poh Kiong’s dissatisfaction with the water supply in the town.
On Wednesday (October 30), it was reported that Teng was unhappy with the apparent failure of JBALB to deliver clean and reliable water supply to Kapit consumers.
According to JBALB, general maintenance and upgrading works on the desludging system would be carried out starting October 28.
At the same time, the department pointed out that intervention works were being carried out, such as the repairing of leaking water tanks, replacing aging pipes and upgrading existing water treatment plants.
“JBALB Kapit has been continuously sending water supply to the affected areas especially those on high ground and at the end point of the pipelines,” it added. The department expressed appreciation for the understanding of the communities and sought their cooperation to conserve water through prudent usage during the upgrading works.
“JBALB water tankers will be on standby and ready to send water to the affected areas,” the statement said, adding that updates will be channelled via JBALB’s official Facebook page.
