KUCHING: The decision to close all tabika, taska and sekolah tahfiz in Sarawak for two weeks effective today is meant to protect the children from being exposed to the coronavirus.
Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the move was necessary as young children had lower immunity system than adults.
“In terms of immunity, generally babies and young children have lower immunity compared to adults even though for Covid-19, it seems to show that it affects more senior citizens than children.
“However, we want to play safe rather than regret later,” she told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
Fatimah hoped for understanding from the parents as well as employers with regard to working parents, especially working mothers.
She also suggested that working from home would be an alternative option for them to cope with the situation in order to prevent from being infected with the virus.
There are 240 registered nurseries (taska) in the state with 3,729 children. For registered kindergartens (tadika), there are 2,893 institutions with 57,673 children.
