THE ombudsman’s office should not come under any influence or be politicised as these could compromise its independence.

Lidam Assan (GPS-Katibas) said the ombudsman plays a crucial role in enhancing governance but there are potential dangers such as the risk of bureaucracy as the introduction of another layer may lead to delays in the decision-making process.

He also said the ombudsman might not be foolproof and could be subject to abuse, potentially becoming a tool for settling political scores.

“Striking the right balance and ensuring the ombudsman’s autonomy are essential to mitigate these potential disadvantages.

“To enhance ombudsman practices and to reap its full benefit, it is important to allow its function to be as independent with autonomy as possible. It must operate independently from political influence, allowing it to carry out its duties objectively and impartially,” he said in his debate speech on the Sarawak Ombudsman Bill 2023 tabled by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan on Monday (Nov 20).

Lidam added that it is important to foster collaboration between the ombudsman’s office and other governmental agencies, NGOs and civil society to strengthen its effectiveness and impact.

“Undeniably through its effort to promote transparency in processes and decision-making it will build public trust. Regularly communicate the outcomes of investigations and resolutions,” he reminded.

‘An Ombudsman Office will improve public awareness on its role and functions, making it easier for citizens to access and utilise its services,” he added.
