DEBAK: Be careful and watch out for any offers of high-paying job opportunities on social media, said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri.

In stating this, he said the modus operandi of human trafficking syndicates was to trap people in the interior of Sarawak who used social media a lot.

“Their modus operandi is to offer work through social media and job websites.

“So, victims are attracted to try new opportunities and end up getting stuck.

“Therefore, be careful when browsing websites that offer job opportunities with luxury offers,” he said.

Mohd Azman said this at a press conference after officiating at the Debak Police Station yesterday (Nov 6).

Also present were Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Welfare Development Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam, Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, Betong Resident Richard Michael Abunawas and Betong District Police Chief DSP Zamry Alli.

Mohd Azman urged the public to consult with more knowledgeable family members to ensure that they did not become victims.

He added that human trafficking syndicates offered attractive job offers with lucrative salaries in USD payments.

“Also, they capitalise on the people’s desire to travel abroad. Employment agents are willing to pay for travel tickets, passports, hotels and manage travel from Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur, then on to Myanmar.

“Therefore, if there is a lack of awareness of fraud cases that occur, our society will be trapped,” Mohd Azman said.

He revealed that in September, Sarawak police received three reports involving eight citizens in Sarawak who were victims of employment fraud crimes and were forced to work with fraud syndicates in Myanmar.
