KUCHING: The bicycle track project along Jalan Kedandi here is expected to be completed by the end of May this year.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the bicycle track is part of the council’s ‘Healthy City’ project and the 450-metre track covers the route along Jalan Kedandi to Taman Sahabat.
He said the council is looking to build the track with a width of 2 metre to 2.5 metre. He however added that that overgrown trees might pose a problem to achieve the desirable track width.
“We will try to achieve 2 meters of 2.5 meters in width for the track but there are old trees (in the way) but we will do what we can.
“I also hope that they (contractor) can complete the project within the specified timeframe, which is within the next four months,” he said.
He said this during a handing over of the bicycle track project to the contractor at Jalan Kedandi here, which was broadcasted live via his Facebook page on Thursday (Feb 8).
As the council is embarking on various green city initiatives, Wee also called on the people to use bicycles as a mean of transport upon the completion of the project.
“We encourage the people to use bicycles or even walk from one end to the other as a form of exercise.
“By using bicycles, it will be environmentally friendly and the people will not have to bring their cars, resulting in lesser petrol consumption,” he said.
The project was awarded to BCA Engineering Sdn Bhd.
