KUCHING: As the school holidays ended yesterday, families were seen leaving their hometowns after the Gawai-Raya celebrations.

Checks by the New Sarawak Tribune revealed a big crowd at the departure hall of Kuching International Airport (KIA) here yesterday afternoon where families and friends were sending off their relatives and wishing them safe journeys ahead.

At the check-in kiosks, AirAsia passengers were seen lining-up in a few long queues.

Apart from the long check-in queues, the counters for luggage drops for all airlines were also packed with passengers.

An engineering university student, Syazwanie Ali said she had booked her ticket to Bintulu early to secure reasonable airfare.

“I bought my ticket early for RM89 only,” she said, adding that the fare will certainly continue to increase during peak periods.

The 21-year-old lass also said that she had arrived at the airport as early as 11.30am to avoid lane congestions.

Marianne Trachang, 28, who is living and working in Kuala Lumpur also said that she arrived at the airport four hours prior to the scheduled departure time.

“Although I have already checked-in and got my boarding pass, I don’t mind waiting for a few hours than to miss my flight today,” he said.
