MUKAH: More than 4,000 people participated in a lantern procession in conjunction with the district-level Mid-Autumn Festival here on Saturday.
Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said the celebration this time received a favourable response from the residents.
She said the celebration last year drew more than 2,000 participants.
“It lifts our spirits after recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, makes children happy and also brings family, neighbourhoods and community closer,” she added.
According to Hanifah in this year’s celebration there was also a stall and mooncake competition as well as a lantern making workshop.
“The attitude of openness in celebrating differences and diversity is very important to make Sarawak a developed and prosperous state because it is the key to the success of all these plans,” she said while officiating at the event.
“We will continue to strengthen the unity and harmony in our society continuously not only among the Tiong Hua community but other races,” said Hanifah who is Mukah MP.
A total of 23 agencies, government bodies and associations participated in the parade during the celebration.
The Creative Giant Lantern Competition and the Open Category Lantern Parade competition was won by Kampung Penakub Baazar, with second place going to the Combined Village Development and Safety Committee (JKKK) and the Neighbourhood Rukun Tetangga Area (KRT) Tellian Tengah, followed by the Chinese National Type School (SJK) Chong Boon.
The Stall and Mooncake Competition was won by the Foochow Mukah Association, runner-up was the Chiang Chuan Association and in third place was JKKK Kampung Pinang.
Also present were Tellian assesemblyman Royston Valentine and Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi.
