ASAJAYA: Kota Samarahan is set to have the biggest boulevard in Sarawak, aimed at hosting large-scale events.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposed boulevard has received approval for development and is awaiting the tender process for project contractors.

Spanning approximately 2 kilometres in length and 26 metres in width, Abdul Karim said the boulevard will stretch from the Al-Muttaqin Mosque area to the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) building.

“The initial cost was only RM80 million, but due to its expansion and inclusion of various facilities such as jogging and biking tracks, the estimated cost will exceed RM100 million.

“It has been approved, and now we are identifying the contractor who will handle it. I believe it can be completed within two to two and a half years,” he said.

He told reporters this after attending the Asajaya Hari Raya gathering at the Asajaya Sports Complex on Saturday.

The Asajaya assemblyman said that future planning aims to accommodate significant state events, relieving congestion at the current Central Padang (Kuching Padang Merdeka).

Karim expressed optimism that the boulevard will attract public attention for recreational and family activities, anticipating the hosting of numerous large-scale events once completed.

“Major events such as the head of state’s birthday and National Day are usually held at Central Padang, which has now become too small.

“If we were to organise a parade and such, it would become congested. So, we need a bigger space to avoid crowding in the city.

“That’s why we’re planning for this long boulevard in Sarawak. The facility can be used as a jogging area, which is good for family bonding. Students can also study there,” he added.

Earlier, the open house event witnessed a lively atmosphere with over 500 visitors, mainly local residents.

Also present was Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang, who is Kota Samarahan MP.
