Bike thief’s joyride ends in jail

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court today (Sept 6) for stealing a motorcycle.

Sharul, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge read before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.

According to the charge, he was accused of stealing a Yamaha motorcycle belonging to a 42-year-old man in front of a bank on Jalan Rock at around 11.29 pm on August 22, 2023.

The accused was charged under Section 379A of the Penal Code.

The complainant, a 42-year-old man, discovered his locked motorcycle missing from the sidewalk of a bank building on Jalan Rock around 10.10 pm on August 23, 2023.

A police report was lodged immediately, and subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the accused.
The estimated loss suffered by the complainant is around RM8,000.

Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage showed the accused stealing the complainant’s motorcycle.

Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
