KUCHING: Yong Tze Kuek was the first among 500 motorcyclists to get a full tank of petrol for free during the RM5 Free Petrol Filling programme held earlier today.
The 70-year-old retiree knew about the programme from social media and he arrived at Petronas fuel station in Jalan Batu Kawa here about half an hour earlier before the programme started at 2pm.
Yong, who resides in the Matang Jaya area here, said it was the first time that he received free petrol for his motorcycle.
“I didn’t want to miss the opportunity. I am so happy so I come all the way here,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when met at the fuel station.
He also thanked Petronas and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) for sponsoring the people and hoped that they could continue the good deed.
Meanwhile, Saifudin Sabli of Batu Kawa, a 25-year-old who works in a private company, hoped the programme could be held annually during festive seasons.
“For the first time in my life, I get to refuel my motorcycle for free and this has definitely brought joy to all of us,” he said.
He also hoped that other people’s elected representatives would organise similar programme.
“Maybe they should consider giving free fuel for cars during festive celebration too, especially long-distance travellers returning to their villages,” he said.
For 21-year-old Muhammad Nur Aizat, also of Batu Kawa, he said he knew about the programme from his friends.
“To give free petrol like this means a lot to us, especially the needy. And we appreciate it very much,” he said.
He added that a programme like this had nothing to do with politics. It doesn’t matter who gives it but what is important is the sincerity to help the people.
Izzah Husna Nen, a female motorcyclist, also of Batu Kawa said she was more than happy as she could at least save RM5 on petrol for this week.
“My brother told me about it so I quickly rode here. I was afraid I would miss the chance to get the free petrol,” she laughed.
She also looked forward to more programmes like this.
