THE Natural Resources and Environment Bill 2024 enables the state government to oversee and evaluate the effects of activities and projects on the environment more effectively.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine said every project with the potential to impact the environment will be required to undergo an impact assessment before approval.

“This is a proactive step to ensure that decisions made do not harm our ecosystem.

“With the introduction of this bill, Sarawak will have more comprehensive laws to protect natural resources and ensure environmental preservation remains a priority,” he said when debating in support of the bill in Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

Royston added that the establishment of a dedicated board, clear enforcement powers, and strict monitoring and licensing procedures are crucial steps toward achieving sustainable development and environmental protection in Sarawak.

He said that through the bill, the Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB) is also empowered to issue prohibition notices to individuals or entities found violating regulations, as well as to impose penalties for such violations.

“This will certainly enhance the effectiveness of enforcing any laws established in Sarawak.

“Strict penalties for those who breach the regulations can be implemented more effectively through financial means and even the potential closure of operations for irresponsible parties,” he added.

Royston emphasised that the bill has a solid structure and foundation in the government’s efforts to protect and conserve natural resources and the environment in  Sarawak.
