KUCHING: The Defence Ministry has selected Bintulu as the location to strengthen the country’s defence fortifications.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stated that Bintulu, especially Samalaju, is a strategically significant area and is closest to the national economic zone.

He asserted that the ministry will construct the headquarters of the 31st Brigade of the Malaysian Army, the headquarters of the Fourth Naval Region of the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM), and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (TUDM) airbase in Bintulu.

“In essence, it has been approved and is now awaiting official correspondence. This clearly demonstrates the government’s commitment, particularly through the Ministry of Defence, to ensure that the coastline, waters, airspace, and borders in Kalimantan are always in a state of readiness.”

Mohamad Hasan spoke to the media following his first official visit to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today (Nov 2).

He added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has approved the construction of seven new border posts along the Kalimantan border.

“Three posts have been completed, while the remaining four are still under construction.

“This is to facilitate the military personnel in carrying out their duties and to reduce cross-border activities.”

Also present were Eastern Field Command commander Lt-Gen Datuk Mohd Sofi Md Lepi, and First Infantry Division commander Maj-Gen Hassan Embong.
