BINTULU: Bintulu is set to generate 1,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity by 2028 through gas turbine cycles.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed the government’s commitment to expanding the Samalaju industrial area and ensuring the provision of necessary infrastructure.
As such, he assured that the gas turbine cycle generation will be commissioned in 2028.
“The Samalaju area will be expanded to facilitate future investments, and as we enlarge Samalaju, we must provide the infrastructure.
“I am pleased to announce that the power generation capacity in Bintulu will be increased to 1,000MW through gas turbine cycles. It will be commissioned in 2028, as the groundwork for the power plant has already started.
“In the first phase, we’ll have 1,000MW. The second phase will also be commissioned in 2028, adding another 500MW. This means Bintulu will generate a total of 1,500MW of electricity.”
Abang Johari said this during Bintulu Development Authority’s Hari Raya open house at Naim Paragon Street Mall today (April 17).
On the same note, he highlighted the successful efforts to increase the amount of gas allocated to Sarawak.
He noted that Petronas and other partners have fulfilled their responsibilities in raising gas supply from 450 million standard cubic feet (scf) per day to 1,200 million scf.
“This is due to the confidence and clear direction of our government in developing industries based on gas.
“We (Sarawak) will be busy in the coming five years regarding electric energy in Bintulu.”
Also present were State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, State Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali and Bintulu Development Authority deputy chairman Datuk Haidar Khan Asghar Khan.
