KUCHING: About 50 species of birds and 16 turtles were rescued from a home on Jalan Krokong, Lorong Taiton 9 in Bau.

All of these are protected species under the Sarawak Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998.

Sarawak Brigade General Operation Force (GOF) Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said all the animals were found during Ops Bersepadu Khazanah jointly carried out by Sarawak GOF and Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) around 4.49pm on Tuesday.

“Checks discovered several birdhouses where these animals were kept. The seized animals were then handed over to the SFC for further action, “he told a press conference at the Sarawak PGA Headquarters here yesterday.

He said the seizure amounted to RM92,000 and a 37-year-old local woman was also arrested for further investigation.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 29 (1) of the Sarawak Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 which provides for a fine of up to RM25,000 or imprisonment of up to two years.
