KAPIT: The State-level birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is finally held physically here after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kapit Division has been selected as the host for this year’s celebration where several programmes will be held from June 5 to 6.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), the locals were happy and excited about the opportunity to be able to promote Kapit to outsiders.
Baleh Constituency Service Centre publicity officer, Andriana Ancak Intai said the organisation of such a programme will create awareness to the public about the beauty and uniqueness of Kapit.
“I hope it will also be able to increase economic activity here through the sales of local handicraft such as beads and ‘pua kumbu’,” he said.
Meanwhile, Harry Don Bosco, a civil servant, said the celebration will bring the government closer to the local community as well as create a spirit of unity and cooperation between all parties involved.
“This celebration can indirectly contribute to the development of ecotourism activities in Kapit,” he added.
The same opinion was voiced by Steven Tanang from Song district.
He was also excited about the organisation of the celebration which he hoped will bring economic returns to the locals.
In this regard, Steven stressed the importance of developing a road system that connects all settlements in Kapit.
“This is to enable those outside Kapit to visit many more interesting places in this division,” he said.
Meanwhile, the celebration began with a thanksgiving ceremony at the Jabal An Nur Kapit Mosque on June 5.
The highlight of the celebration includes a tea reception which will be held at the Kapit Town Square on June 6 at 9am.
In the evening, the public will be treated to a Symphony Concert which will feature local Sarawakian singers.
Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib are expected to attend the celebration.
