KUCHING: Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday received a courtesy call from the organising committee of his 84th birthday celebration at his residence in Demak Jaya here.
The delegation was led by Local Government and Housing Minister and minister responsible for the celebration, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
The purpose of the visit was to invite the Head of State and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib to events held in conjunction with the birthday celebration from Oct 9 to 11 here.
Among the events are the thanksgiving ceremony at Masjid India Bandar Kuching, the investiture ceremony and the state banquet at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building as well as a tea banquet.
Taib also received a courtesy call from the Serian Islamic Welfare Trust Board (Lakis) committee members.
Led by Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus, the purpose of the visit was to request for land for the expansion of villages in Serian which were often hit by floods.
“The land is also to accommodate the growing population in Kampung Hulu, Kampung Hilir, Kampung Munggu Limo and Kampung Siantan, which is now estimated to reach more than 3,000 people,” said John.
The Lakis committee members also proposed the development of the Serian Riverfront and Serian night market next to the Serian Division Mosque, which was being upgraded and renovated.
According to a member, when completed, the Serian Riverfront will be one of tourist attractions in the town.
“We also propose that the night be relocated to a more suitable area to attract more visitors,” he added.
