KUCHING: The Gawai Tematu Carnival 2023 goes into its eighth edition this year with its beauty contest ‘Bitanding Dayung Gawea Tematu 2023’ as the main highlight of the two-day event on May 26 and 27.
The carnival’s organising chairman John Pata said apart from the beauty contest, the Onak Dayung Gawea Tematu 2023 competition, Birogong (Traditional Musical Instrument) competition and Bidayuh Traditional Dance Competition 2023 are also being held.
The Gawai carnival also introduces a brand-new competition called ‘Gawea Tematu Sindok Competition 2023’ alongside other activities such as traditional sports competitions, including ‘Nyilitiak Toring’ and ‘Ngituak Irau’, handicraft competitions, exhibitions, and food and drink booths.
“Entry forms for each competition are filled out online and have been publicised through the Gawai Tematu Gawai Tematu and Bitanding Dayung Gawea Tematu Facebook page and the closing date for participation is on March 31, 2023 (Friday).
“The participation fee for Bitanding Dayung Gawea Tematu 2023 is RM100, Onak Dayung Tematu 2023 Competition is RM20, Sindok Gawea Tematu 2023 Competition is RM50, while Birogong and Bidayuh Traditional Dance Competition are RM100 each. All competition fees are non-refundable,” he said in a in a statement today.
The competition is open to the public and offers lucrative cash prizes.
Meanwhile, for hawkers, John said they can rent a booth during the carnival with only a fee of RM100 for the two-day event.
