BINTULU: Twenty-nine foreign workers were left with nothing but clothes on their backs after several units of their workers’ quarters was engulfed by flames at Kampung Extension Tatau, Jalan Tatau yesterday (July 30).

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the 3.55 pm incident as the Indonesian and Bangladeshi nationals managed to evacuate to safety.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Tatau station were dispatched to the scene, about 6km away, after receiving an emergency call.

Upon arrival, they found that the blaze completely destroyed one block of the workers’ quarters, which consisted of 12 units.

Extinguishing works were carried out using water sourced from their fire truck and the flames were brought under control at 6.08 pm.

After ensuring that the situation was safe and there was no risk of reignition, the team ended the operation at 5:35 pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
