KUCHING: The body of a man who fell from a vessel near Isthmus Bridge, Jalan Dermaga here last Wednesday, was found today.

The victim was identified as Santosh Kumar, 23, an Indian national.

State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) spokesperson said the search and rescue (SAR) operation’s control post received a call from the public at 8.48am on the discovery of a body afloat in front of the river barrage.

A team of firefighters were immediately deployed to the location. The victim’s body was taken to the control post and confirmed by a factory supervisor as the person who had fallen into the river.

The body was handed over to the police for further actions.

Last Wednesday, the vessel’s helmsman had witnessed the victim falling off from the ship some 15 minutes after departing from Sheng Jetty heading towards Kuching Barrage.

Crew members had attempted to save the victim by throwing a buoy to him but failed when he disappeared in the water.

Following the discovery, the SAR operation was called off at 9.30am this morning.
