KAPIT: The body of a man who was reported missing after a fishing trip turned tragic on Wednesday (May 25), was found in the river at Nanga Merirai today.

A spokesman from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the victim identified as Julius Melina, 36, was found around 4.10pm.

“The body was found by the police, not far from Nanga Merirai health clinic, which was about 40km from where he was last seen.

“Once the body was retrieved, it was handed over to the police to be taken to the hospital,” the spokesman said.

On Wednesday, the victim went out fishing with two of his friends on a longboat at 12am and the boat capsized along their journey.

Two of them managed to save themselves while, the victim was said to have drowned. A police report on the incident was lodged.

Following the incident, firemen from Kapit station were called in by the police to assist in the search for the victim today.

The search was carried out downstream via water surface searching.
