KUCHING: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) will patrol and engage with the community as part of its fire safety campaign in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Sarawak Bomba director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said the aim of the campaign was to raise awareness and educate the community on the importance of preventing fires, which had caused multiple deaths this year, “especially when we are now transitioning into the endemic phase of the coronavirus.”

“There was a decrease in the number of fire cases in the past two years, which I believe was due to the fact that people are more careful during the movement control order (MCO) period.

“However, as of March 31 this year, we have seen a rise in fire cases in the space of three months, with 37 cases reported and a total of seven deaths already, which is concerning,” he said after the launch of the campaign at Mydin Supermarket, Vista Tunku Petra Jaya here.
