KUCHING: The State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba Sarawak) and other relevant agencies are on high alert in view of the wet spell forecast.
Bomba Sarawak director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said the department has been deploying personnel for patrols around high-risk areas.
He said this is to provide concerned public assurance that the department and its personnel are ready to assist in the event of a landslide or flood.
“Most of the cases that occurred due to the heavy rain on Monday (Feb 27) night were immediately taken care of by our personnel who were on site when they received directives from our operation centre.
“In fact, we assisted five students from Kampung Segubang to go to SMK Lake and three students from Kampung Bau Lama to SMK Paku by using our boat and lorry to ensure they are able to sit for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.
Over the last few years, Khirudin pointed out that the approach in handling disasters deployed by the department has been effective as a result of reliable information received.
He said real time and accurate information from the public has enabled the department to deploy its personnel more efficiently and effectively.
This also includes information received from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) and Meterological Department Malaysia among others.
“All information received by our operation centre is taken seriously, that is why the cases over the past few days in particular were handled diligently,” he said.
At the same time, Khirudin reminded the public to comply with any directives given by the authority as it is for their own safety.
“The moment you are told to evacuate, do not hesitate because we do not want you to be trapped.
“The manpower of our rescue teams is limited so we will do a sweep process, if you do not listen and follow the directives then you might be left out,” he added.
