The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) is set to launch the Water Activities Safety Council (MKAA) programme in the district this year.
The announcement was made by Mohamad Fauzi Mohamad Kifli, deputy director of the Fire Safety Division, during a courtesy call on Bau District officer Constantine Gerald David Jonas, on yesterday (Aug 17).
The launch of MKAA will be graced by Sarawak Deputy Minister for Transport (Maritime and Riverine), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, who is also the Tasik Biru assemblyman.
The primary objective of the MKAA programme, as noted by Fauzi, is to heighten awareness, improve rescue operations, and implement initiatives aimed at reducing drowning incidents across various settings, including homes, workplaces, water transport, recreational areas, and bodies of water.
“It is also designed to encourage safe practices during water-related activities, whether they are sports or recreation, as well as to promote the integration of safety measures and essential equipment in water-related infrastructure,” he elaborated.
As part of his visit, he proposed that the programme’s launch coincide with the Tasik Biru Festival scheduled from Octo 27 to 29.
Additionally, Fauzi mentioned a planned water rescue demonstration utilising a helicopter at Tasik Biru on the day of the MKAA inauguration.
Constantine, who also chairs the Tasik Biru Festival 2023 Main Committee, warmly welcomed Bomba’s proposal to include this demonstration as part of the festival’s events.
Also present were Bau District Council secretary Ong Chin Ping, and Bau Bomba chief Tawang Lingem.
